Dixie is the mare that started it all. We bought her as a coming 2 year old.
The previous owner had tried to breed her to a mammoth jack “but she didn’t stick”. She was a pretty, solid black filly with a really nice running walk. We brought her home and it became clear, within a couple of months, that she had, indeed, stuck. On Good Friday that year Dixie lay down and foaled a black molly. Another thing that became crystal clear very quickly was her quiet, gentle nature was
one in a million. We had six children, from ages
three to twelve, crawling all over her and she didn’t mind. Dogs, cattle, traffic, horns, machinery, Dixie took them all in stride. We started her under saddle ourselves riding her to the farm (3 miles one direction) with her foal at her side along the highway. Within a couple of years we decided we had to have another one because neither Mark or I wanted to ride anything else. Dixie is now 23 years old, has had several nice gaiting foals for us. She is not for sale at any price!
